Music

The Monmouth College Department of Music provides excellent vocal and instrumental music performance opportunities for all students. In addition to the Monmouth Pipe Band, a premiere bagpipe ensemble, Monmouth College also has numerous choirs, bands, and an orchestra. Top ensembles tour frequently, including an international tour every four years; recently student musicians performed in Italy, Spain, and New York City’s Carnegie Hall.

The benefit of studying music at Monmouth is the amount of individual attention that you receive from each of your instructors and the ability to create opportunities that best enhance your education. In addition to the high level of music instruction, studying on a liberal arts campus enhances communication, writing, leadership, and critical thinking skills.

Ensembles & Performance Opportunities

Classical to contemporary, vocal to instrumental, light-hearted to the highest in serious art, the numerous ensembles and performance opportunities at Monmouth College present students with an exciting range of options. In addition to the ensembles listed here, there are many other performance opportunities throughout the year, and new groups are always being formed in response to the needs and wants of the students. All ensembles are open to all students regardless of major, although some ensembles require an audition.

Vocal ensembles include the Monmouth Chorale, the Chamber Singers, a cappella groups and the Concert Choir.

Instrumental ensembles include the Monmouth Winds, the Fighting Scots Marching Band, the Concert Band, the Jazz Band, and the Percussion Ensemble.

String ensembles include the Monmouth Chamber Orchestra.

Teacher Licensure

Monmouth College has an IL State Educator Preparation and Licensure Board approved program for Initial Teacher Licensure in Music (K-12). Please contact the Educational Studies Department to obtain the current requirements for teacher licensure in this content area.

Lessons

Those pursuing studies in Music can choose from a number of different lessons. Applied lessons are available in woodwind, brass, percussion, string, piano, and voice areas.

Scholarships

Music scholarships are awarded in the areas of instrumental ensembles, vocal ensembles, piano, and pipe band. Auditions for these scholarships take place in February during Fine Arts programs or by appointment. The awards are available regardless of major to prospective students.

Facilities

Dahl Auditorium and Chapel, Kasch Performance Hall

Most musical events at Monmouth College enjoy the excellent acoustics of the 600-seat Auditorium and Chapel. Built in 1896, it is the college’s oldest academic building. In 2002 and 2003, generous gifts by Arthur Dahl and Louise Kasch funded much of a $3.5 million renovation of the original Dan Everett Waid-designed structure.

These renovations completely updated the building’s interior with a new stage, seating, classrooms, rehearsal spaces, and modern mechanical systems, while preserving its Old English-Gothic-style. The newest instrument in Dahl is an $80,000 concert grand Steinway piano.

Austin Hall

Austin Hall houses the offices of the music faculty and most music classes. There are many practice rooms outfitted with upright and grand pianos, and the building also houses the piano lab.
