Pharmacy

One of the benefits of studying at Monmouth College is the personal attention. The liberal arts preparation enhances communication skills, writing skills, leadership, and the ability to critically analyze information. The program is research intensive with ample opportunities for student-designed independent research.

Pharmacy school has been a choice of Monmouth College graduates in recent years. At most institutions, pharmacy school is 4 years in duration, and the student earns a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.) degree. Admission to pharmacy school only requires the completion of the pre-pharmacy requirements that are specific to the school.

Most schools prefer applicants who complete an undergraduate degree prior to matriculation. Because of the course requirements, Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Biology are common majors for students planning to attend pharmacy school.

The Pre-Pharmacy studies are based in the Chemistry Department. The Monmouth College Chemistry Department is accredited by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and offers a program that leads to ACS certification upon graduation.

Labs & Equipment

The Departments of Chemistry and Biology have well-equipped laboratory facilities in the new Center for Science and Business building. The $42 million dollar building opened in the Fall of 2013 and promotes interaction among what have been traditionally independent departments.

Along with the Cadaver Lab, there are also many major instruments students start using their first year and continue to develop their skills throughout their four years at Monmouth:

Undergraduate Research

  1. Instills a level of “scientific” confidence and independence in students.
  2. Enables students to apply and broaden their knowledge learned in the classroom.
  3. Is an invaluable way for students to strengthen their scientific communication skills.
  4. Exposes students to open-ended questions.

Students are encouraged to become involved in undergraduate research as early as the Fall semester of their sophomore year. Students are required before their senior year to register for 3 credits of research.
