From the first year, your academic program is determined by your choices and goals. Your faculty adviser gets to know you and works alongside you to create a strategy for your academic program and preparation. Only a personal setting such as Monmouth makes individual advising possible in this way.
The Honors Program engages a select group of well-qualified students and incorporates a variety of special courses central to liberal education.
Each Honors course is distinctive and taught by some of our best faculty. The program begins with two introductory courses followed by students pursuing in-depth examinations of the thought and work of people, events, movements, and ideas instrumental in shaping our world. From there students choose a specially designed junior or senior-level, interdisciplinary, independent study course whose outcome is a project and public presentation. Finally, senior Honors students are invited to select an activity or project from a menu of service learning, campus leadership and research opportunities.
Acceptance into the program is determined competitively, first by invitation and application at the time of admission, and then again at mid-semester of the fall semester of the freshman year. Sophomores, and sophomore transfer students may also seek admission.
Monmouth offers an outstanding array of off-campus study programs, through association with some of the best colleges and universities as well as Monmouth-designed programs. For example, in 2012 Associate Academic Dean Bren Tooley taught a summer course at the prestigious Fulbright International Summer Institute and four of her students were accepted to join her for the 2-week institute in Bulgaria. Other popular programs include a seamless program in Scotland, an arts program in Italy or London, or science or economics study at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
In the inaugural edition of the U.S. News Most Connected Colleges index, Monmouth ranked in the top 12 percent of all schools. Computed from school responses to U.S. News’s most recent Best Colleges statistical survey, the index measures schools’ effectiveness in providing online services related to how courses are received and delivered, the accessibility of academic support services and networking among students and faculty.
In the last 10 years, Monmouth has invested more than $120 million in upgrades, renovations and new construction. Our newest facility, the Center for Science and Business (opened Fall 2013) is equipped with the latest facilities ranging from a mock boardroom to a cadaver lab, to a new observatory.
