Students will obtain a solid foundation in the molecular sciences at the intersection of chemistry and biology that will prepare them for employment, professional school, or graduate school upon graduation. Students will also learn how to use scientific literature information effectively.

The Chemistry Department is accredited by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and offers a program that leads to ACS certification upon graduation. This program of study is recommended for students planning to enter government or industrial laboratories as a chemist or for those students planning to enter chemistry graduate programs. The major is also popular with pre-med students.

An emphasis in Food Security may also be added to this major/minor.

The department is located with other departments in the new Center for Science and Business. Students begin using state-of-the-art instrumentation in the first year and continue to develop skills throughout their four years at Monmouth and in research projects.

Special Programs

An endowment allows the department to support 6-8 students on campus for summer research each year and take up to 10 students per year to the National American Chemical Society Meeting where they present their work. Another endowment to the department is a library fund which provides internet access to current research journals, the latest book and periodical publications, and the latest in chemistry and scientific software.

Undergraduate Research

  1. Instills a level of “scientific” confidence and independence in students.
  2. Enables students to apply and broaden their knowledge learned in the classroom.
  3. Is an invaluable way for students to strengthen their scientific communication skills.
  4. Exposes students to open-ended questions.

Students are encouraged to become involved in undergraduate research as early as the Fall semester of their sophomore year. Students are required before their senior year to register for 3 credits of research. They are also encouraged to spend at least one summer during their college career in an REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) program at a research university or at Monmouth College. The best way to demonstrate the value of undergraduate research to students at Monmouth College is to hear from Monmouth College students themselves.

Graduate School Opportunities

A degree in biochemistry from Monmouth College opens many doors. With a solid background in chemistry and the oral and written communication skills acquired from a liberal arts education, our graduates are prepared for a variety of fields. Biochemistry majors have found success in medical, graduate, and professional schools. Recent graduates are employed by such companies as Proctor and Gamble, Sigma Aldrich, Eli Lilly, and Nanocor.
