Program Requirements

Requirements for the Major:

  • COMM 230: Introduction to Communication Studies
  • COMM 231: Interpersonal Communication
  • COMM 261: Mass Media and Modern Society
  • COMM 321: Junior Colloquium
  • COMM 421: Senior Colloquium
  • COMM 491: Freedom of Expression & Comm. Ethics
  • COMM 340: Communication Research Methods

Choose one of the following courses:

  • COMM 231—Interpersonal Communication
  • COMM 233: Advanced Public Speaking
  • COMM 235: Small Group Communication
  • COMM 236: Argumentation & Debate
  • COMM 250: Special Topics in Comm.

Choose two of the following courses:

  • COMM 333: Organizational Communication
  • COMM 337: Communication Criticism
  • COMM 339: Persuasion    
  • COMM 350: Special Topics in Comm
  • Choose one of the following courses:
  • COMM 260: Introduction to Journalism 1
  • COMM 269: Multi-Media Production 1
  • PUBR 363: Media and Public Relations Writing

In addition:

  • Plus two electives in COMM/PUBR chosen in consultation with their academic advisor, one of which MUST be taken at the 300 level. 
  • An Independent Study or Internship
  • 0.5 course credits of COMM 100/200 workshops
  • Acceptance of a senior electronic portfolio

Requirements for the Communication Studies Minor: 

Choose one of the following courses:

  • COMM 231: Interpersonal Communication
  • COMM 235: Small Group Communication
  • COMM 236    Argumentation and Debate

Choose two of the following courses:

  • COMM 333: Organizational Communication
  • COMM 337: Communication Criticism
  • COMM 339: Persuasion 1

In addition:

  • At least one COMM workshop (0.25 credit)
  • An additional COMM elective course credit.

Requirements for the Media Minor: 

  • COMM 261: Mass Media and Modern Society
  • COMM 269: Multi-Media Production 1
  • PUBR 267     Layout and Design
  • PUBR 363: Media and Public Relations Writing
  • At least one COMM workshop (.25 credit).
